What has your experience with the FODMAP diet been like?

Who has tried the FODMAP diet for finding food triggers?

  1. Hi , I personally found the Low FODMAP diet very helpful at first, and so do many others. If you don't know your triggers yet, this diet is a great place to start. In addition, you could also keep a food diary if you haven't already: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/food-journal-download. Please let us know if you end up doing Low FODMAP and how it goes for you! All the best, Karina (team member)

    1. I don't feel like it has helped me much. I'm staying hungry and not gaining any weight.

      1. I hear you. FODMAP was also hard for me too. I decided to do a mix of FODMAP and allowing myself to add other foods not on the list that made my stomach feel better. Maybe you can try something like this? -Elizabeth (team member)

    2. Thank you!!

      1. I also just wanted to add that the Low FODMAP diet is not for everyone, so if it doesn't work, you really don't have to force yourself to follow it! Maybe keeping a food journal might be a better idea for you? We have a free one you can download here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/food-journal-download. We're all so different, and sometimes foods that are safe for many people don't work and supposedly "unsafe" foods can be fine. For me, dairy is often okay, but pumpkins and squashes make me very sick, even though they're supposed to be safe, for example.
        Wishing you all the best,
        Karina (team member)

    3. During the elimination phase it did not relieve my symptoms at all and after 5 weeks the dietician I was using told me to stop.

      1. The Low FODMAP diet is not for everyone, so you're not alone with that experience! I'm glad the dietitian told you to stop when it clearly didn't work for you. Have you found another way of pinponting your triggers and safe foods?
Keeping a food journal can be helpful as well, we have a free one you can download here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/food-journal-download, in case you haven't tried that already.
