IBS-D urgent diarrhea

I’ve had IBS-D for about a year now and have been having a lot of episodes of what I call urgent diarrhea. This is when you feel like you have to go to the bathroom and you literally have to run and hope you make it in time and there have been times when I didn’t make it. It’s very frustrating and embarrassing and I feel like I can’t leave the house. Does anyone else have this problem and if so have you found anything that controls it? I have just started taking Colestid and has seemed to help but I have still had some episodes out of the blue so I don’t feel confident enough to leave the house. Any suggestions welcome.

  1. Hi, juat wanted to say that you are not alone and so many of our community members deal with the urgency issue: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/accident-urgency That's just one of the articles, and as you can see by the many comments, it is not an unknown feeling to many! Hoepfully this site will help you to find some suggestions but, as always, let us know if there's anything else we can do to help! Keep on keepin' on, DPM

  2. Thanks for reaching out and for the information.
    Take care

  3. Have you tried keeping a food journal to see if something you eat triggers it? Or maybe some breathing exercises if it comes from anxiety or stress (Nerva is good if anxiety is a trigger for you)? Check prescriptions and supplements, if you take any, to see if they may trigger side effects. Check labels of foods for sugar alcohols or other things that may cause diarrhea. I have learned that there are certain things that trigger mine, but also flare-ups just happen sometimes for no known reason, but these things have helped me.

    1. Food journals are certainly a good choice if it is becoming difficult to figure out triggers! Thanks for suggesting that! Keep on keepin' on, DPM

  4. I find over-the-counter Imodium helps when I start having bouts of urgent diarrhea. I start with half a pill. It usually stops the urgent part at least, and gives me manageable stool. However, it is a very short term solution. I can't be on Imodium for days in a row. If I am constantly having issues, I change my diet until I am more regular. I cut out all fresh fruit and veggies, and any kind of legume or bean. I eat more protein, bread and rice. Really bland food. I limit dairy to hard cheeses and everything must be cooked. I can't eat like this all the time, so depressing. I can do this for a max 4 days in a row, that is about as long as I can stand it. Then over the next couple days I start adding a few cooked veggies with my meals, maybe some cooked fruit. Then some lettuce on my sandwich, etc. I slowly work it back into my diet.
