Bowels & IBS

Hi

During covid I noticed a difference in bowel movements, stools were soft and after bowel movement I would need to return to the toilet as my anus felt wet.

I went to the doctor who suggested I had IBS and went on a FODMAP diet, this essentially worked as in stool was no longer soft but I was constipated and it didnt last long.

This triggered a lifestyle change, joined a gym, lost some weight and moved to Huel for lunch as I'm on the go quite a lot, but the soft stools remain and the return to the toilet after bowel movements,

Last year I had colonoscopy and no issues found, they inserted a solution to clear my bowels which were already clear, a passing comment was that perhaps my pelvic floor was weak and I now have an appointment for that to be assessed.

The pelvic floor is because part of the problem is the need to return to the toilet after bowel movements as anus is wet, this is generally a yellowish residue, I presume mucus as stools smear and to be honest a shower is the quickest and easiest way to clean myself after bowel movements.

I dont think there is anything wrong with my pelvic floor, I can stop mid flow of a wee and fully empty bowels, I'm not 100% convinced its IBS, my problem is soft stools and the need to return to the toilet after bowel movements, could be 5 minutes after, could be 10 and could be a few times for a couple of hours.

Should I be looking at anything else which is causing this, I wondered if I had developed an intolerance which could cause this to happen?

I used to eat fairly spicy food but I don't go near it now.

Could this be stress related, my job can be stressful but I don't go home worrying about work, I can't pin the soft stools to a particular diet as it seems constant, first part of stool is quite solid but the end is soft and smeary.

Thanks and apologies for the long post

  1. Hi and welcome to our community.
First of all, I'm very sorry that you're dealing with this. I suppose you have had blood and stool tests done as well, in addition to the colonoscopy, to rule out any infections?
Sometimes, symptoms like these can be related to food triggers. For example, I get something similar when I eat onions and garlic, or too much dairy, for example. Other common triggers are gluten, artificial sweeteners, fatty foods, caffeine...
You also mentioned that all this started after Covid, so I'm also wondering if the virus might have caused this? We've had a couple of community members with post-Covid IBS, I'm going to link a forum here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/covid-ibs, if you're interested in reading it.
If it was triggered by the illness: have you tried probiotics yet? They can work very well after an illness or stomach bug, in my experience. Saccamoyces boulardii and Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus can be great for diarrhea-type issues.
As for stress, that can absolutely be a trigger. I have anxiety and it's by far my biggest trigger. If you're also stressing about symptoms, it can cause a bit of a vicious cycle for some people...
I hope that you'll be able to figure out what's causing this very soon.
    Big hugs, Karina (team member)
