My longest ibs episode

So I've had gripey stomach cramps since Monday, 4 days ago. Every time I eat , I then opened my bowels after each meal. That pain and bowel movement very different from normal flare up. Normally it's sharp pain left bowel then I go to the loo loads, not diarrhoea, nausea sets in afterwards which is the worst but the next day im fine. So this 4 day episode plus diarrhoea wasn't what im used to. I thought it was a bug .Doc sent me to hospital where I waited 5 hours . Bloods fine, they said bad ibs flare up. I wonder why. Not eaten anything different. I really hope this doesn't happen again. Im so unhappy about this condition, it really affects my life
What do your flare ups look like and how do you cope with nausea?

  1. A bad IBS attack in itself can feel a bit like food poisoning or a tummy bug. I know, and you have my sympathy. I have never found my IBS attacks even when bad, to give me much in the way of "upper tummy" problems like being actually sick. But I have felt that nausea-like sensation which is part chill, part a scary feeling. and part a sort of shocked feeling because the gut feels in such a mess and is screaming "red alerts" at us!

IBS is also devious. We get used to certain routines of our bad IBS days, and think things must be worse or something else, if all of a sudden something shifts or changes. But IBS can change just on its own whim and fancy sometimes.

I have had some bad IBS days, but they only happened sometimes, and for most of the time, things stayed pretty manageable. It's likely you will too.

But it's good that you did get checked out when you felt something was quite different.

It's likely a plain bland diet will help you come through the bad flare up and steady out again. That always helped me -the plain protein, white rice, white toast, and only two kinds of veggies kind of thing! Really boring. But everyone has different foods that work for them. The above are just mine!

You might find sipping on tea made from fresh ginger root, or even nibbling on a small slice of ginger root can help to relieve nausea. I used to like ginger root chopped fine and combined with honey.
Peppermint tea might help too, and perhaps Camomile to settle the nervous feelings in the tummy.
I also found that sipping on a very small amount of brandy with honey mixed into it helped me. But as alcohol can be a tummy irritant, that might not suit everyone! It just helped me.
