Mucus mucus mucus

Hi. I am 40. I've had IBS since I was 15. The main problem and the reason I went to the doctor when I was 15 is because my IBS suddenly started and the only real symptom was leaking mucus.

I went for tests at the time and saw a consultant who told me it was just IBS and there was nothing they could do about it.

It has made my life hell. I wear pads everyday and have to change them frequently. It affects every part of my life. I used to be into playing football, hockey, running events etc. I had to stop all of that because the leaky mucus, although it happens all the time, is much much worse when I exercise or if I'm somewhere hot.

They're the two things that really make it a lot worse. I had to stop playing team sports and isolated myself as much as possible.

I have read lots of people complaining of mucus in their faeces but I've never seen anyone else that has leaky mucus everyday.

It's not diarrhea, my stools have always been normal.

Does anyone else suffer with this?? What can I do to make my life better? I have been doing FODMAP for a couple of years. I have seen minor improvements but if I exercise or have sex ( any exertion) it starts.

Any advice gratefully received.

  1. This happens with me, not necessarily with mucous but just leakage. I wear a feminine pad every day due to this. I find that when I eat foods I shouldn't is when it get's worse. I am no doctor but I believe there has to be some sort of infection near the rectum. Have you tried coconut oil suppositories? -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Thanks for your reply - it is kind of reassuring to know I'm not the only one. I'm a man, who the thought of using pads didn't really occur to me until I was in my 20's - it suddenly made life more manageable and I regretted not thinking about it sooner as I could have continued to have a reasonable school and college life otherwise.

I take caprylic acid supplements, which are made from coconut oil (I think) but haven't tried suppositories. I will do some research. Have you found them to be beneficial?

    2. I worked with a Naturopathic Medical Doctor and he told me to try it. I found it amazingly helpful. I ordered suppository molds off amazon and then made it at home. You pop them in the freezer. Definitely get guidance from a doctor but I was happy I did it. -Elizabeth (team member)
