Does anyone experience uncontrollable gas/odor?

Hi, I was diagnosed with IBS 5 months ago. The worst symptom I got is uncontrollable gas. Doctors said that this may be my own hallucination?! I haven’t found any article here where this is mentioned as a symptom. I am even not sure if this is uncontrollable gas or just a bad odor from undigested food. I really don’t want to underestimate other symptoms, I experience some like abdominal pain and bowel movements but to me nothing is that embarrassing. This totally ruins my social life, work, not to mention relationships. Please give any advice. Does anyone else suffer from this symptom? Thank you!

Well SveD the drs tell us there is nothing physically wrong with our bowels yet we are in absolute misery with diarrhoea or constipation, cramps etc.. .. so your frequent smelly gas could have many reasons. I noticed on a web site that gas can be from chewing gum, swallowing air when eating or drinking etc… have u ruled those out? Another mentioned charcoal tablets, but have to check with your dr first of course. Best of luck with tracking down the cause.. it sure can be embarrassing, to say the least, but within reason it is something we all do.

Hi… having IbsD I dont, SveD, unless I have taken Imodium, which is often… then I find although the medication holds back the diarrhea for a while, the air/gas comes thru a lot more. I wonder if its the medical condition, or something you are eating? Sometimes my cramps are not as painful when the gas gets out… but odour isnt very bad. Hope someone can help.

@DorisE, is yours a medical condition? Mine is not for sure, doctors told me that there is nothing wrong they see, normal blood picture and condintion of my intestine, although the right side seems to be a bit lower as supposed. Complely healthly with a functal disorder of my digestive system. They have told me that there ia nothing to do or prescribe…I don’t know about the food, I’m keeping a diary but cannot find a pattern. Good that you know your trigger. Once the bad period starts with me, it doesn’t really matter what I eat, even if I don’t eat for the whole day, still the same..

That’s a really tough symptom to manage, @sved! I’m so sorry to hear how difficult that’s made your social life. While we wait for others to chime in, I thought I’d share this article with you. I hope this helps! – Chris, IrritableBowelSyndrome.net

Many thanks for the support, Chris! My syndrom was caused by stress and depression relalated to a long unhealthy relationship. Once I was diagnosed I finally decided to break up. I feel calmer now and intent to fight agains this syndrome. I really hope getting rid of this is achievable given the circumstances although it is believed IBS is incurable.
