Trying the Medication Cholestyramine

I've been on cholestyramine for my IBS-D for about a month now, with mixed results. It's a powder you take by mouth. I've been experimenting with the dosage and timing of taking it. Has anybody else tried this medication? Curious to see what people have to say about it...

Amazing News: My urgency to go is completely gone, that never happens anymore.

Bad news: I constantly feel bloated/have cramps and feel like I will need to go to the bathroom soon, but then never end up going...very odd.

  1. Thanks for reaching out! Glad you have seen some relief with urgency. Be sure to speak with your doctor about any new, changing or concerning symptoms, if you haven't already. In addition to speaking with your doctor, this article may be helpful: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/cholestyramine-for-ibs-d. Wishing you continued relief ahead. 1. Yeah, I tried it last summer for diarrhea. First off, it made me gag because it was like drinking sand. Second, after only three doses I had the worst constipation of my life. Absolutely horrible experience and haven't taken it since. My doctors now think it is endometriosis causing my issues not IBS so that could make a difference...who knows. I'm glad it is working for you though!

      1. Appreciate hearing your experience. It's a good reminder that we are all different and will respond to things differently. Wishing you some relief ahead. Best, Kelly, Irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team member

    2. I take Cholestipol which is in the same class of drug as Cholestyramine. Cholestipol is not known for the side effects common to Cholestyramine. ie: bloating, flatulence, abdominal pain and possible constipation. You might talk to your provider about the pros and cons of switching your medication. I take 1 gram pills twice a day and it helps. Though I believe that Cholestyramine is a more effective and aggressive as a treatment.

      1. Thank you for this input! I love cholestyramine because the urgency to go is gone. However I am left with bloating and periods of discomfort after eating. I've tried different dosage amounts and timing of eating/taking the powder...still messing around with that...
