Cholestyramine for IBS-D

Hey IrritableBowelSyndrome.net Community - A community member from our Facebook group posted this question in our visitor's area, and I was wondering if anyone had any input:

"Has anyone tried Cholestyramine for IBS-D? My doctor prescribed it for me yesterday. It is a powder that you have to mix in juice or water."

Thanks, all!

  1. Yea, I have been using it since This fall and it has worked wonderfully! Look up information about bile malabsorption to learn more about how it works. I started going to Mayo this fall and have learned so much! The trick with this medicine has been to regulate correctly so it doesn’t become IBS-C instead!

Mayo suggested I use 1/2 the powder each day. When I used the full amount daily I become constipated. I mix mine with applesauce daily and it taste fine. I prefer that over mixing it in a drink!

I had my gall bladder out 15 years ago and have dealt with IBS-D. Mayo stated that for some people removal of gall bladder can cause this issue!

If I stop using the powder for one or two days I go right back to daily diarrhea!

I can’t believe it took me 15 years to learn this! Finally going to Mayo in MN has really helped identify many of my gastrointestinal issues!
