Some advice please! New to this IBS

Hello everyone. I hope I can get some help here..I'm at my wits end. Have had stomach problems for about a year now. Have had lots of tests, all negative, and I can tell the doctor is now raising his eyes when I walk trough the door. I have been on emeprazole for 10 years and not sure if this is a kick back from being on them for too long. I have a constant sore stomach, bloating and constant feeling of needing to empty my bowels. It's driving me crazy! I have been on buscopan for a week, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Is there any medications out there that give even temporary relief? Just to get a break from it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Hello and welcome to our community. I'm sorry to hear that you've been having these problems for that long without any relief or answers.
First of all, regarding your question about Omeprazole and PPIs in general, they can indeed negatively impact digestion and cause SIBO: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/proton-pump-inhibitors. Have you been tested for SIBO? If not, we have some info about it here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/getting-tested-for-sibo. Many community members have found that they needed to see a Naturopathic doctor in order to get the test though, but that might depend.
Have you tried adjusting your diet, like following the Low FODMAP diet or keeping a food journal, for example? Many people find that figuring out food triggers helps reduce symptoms. For me personally, that was definitely the first step to finding any relief at all, as none of the medications/remedies I was prescribed at the beginning helped at all.
I hope this helps a little and that other community members will chime in soon.

    1. Thank you very much Karina..I am just heading out the door, but will read your links later when home. Appreciated!

      1. I have read both the links...thank you for that. There seems to be so many different things it could be! Having taken ppis for a decade, my gut bacteria must be all over the place, but the doctor says it might be an ulcer, and the ppi is the treatment. I am confused..I have however contacted a naturopath so will see what comes from that. Thanks again for your response. Cheers Adam

        1. I remember when they thought I had an ulcer - it was one of the most painful things I ever experienced! They kept me in the hospital for two weeks with basically just broth and water! It was awful! It didn't end up being an ulcer but the pain was very similar I'm told, so it must be very uncomfortable. Sorry you are going through it! Hopefully some of the acid inhibitors will help to mitigate it for you and seeing someone who can help you get on a more natural diet can't hurt. Just make sure to check with your physician before any treatment changes! I made that mistake once or twice and it derailed things for a little while. Let us know if there's anything else we can do to help! Keep on keepin' on, DPM

      2. Thank you very much for your kind words. I had a clean food day yesterday, oats and yogurt, and there is definitely a difference, so food definitely plays a part. I would love to come off emeprazole, and start creating a natural healthy gut! But baby steps. Will see what happens with naturopathy doctor, and report back. Many thanks again for the input. 😃
