Senna Tea

Hi I have IBS-M meaning i get really constipated and then get horrible diarrhea and bloating. I have seen others say senna works for them but I wanted to know does senna tea cause cramps like with a flare up or linzess? Also is the senna as strong as linzess?

  1. I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I don't have any personal experience with Senna tea, however talks about it in this article: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/talk-constipation, in comparison to Miralax. I hope that other community members will chime in and share their experiences with you soon. All the best, Karina (team member)

    1. ecdellamea I feel you! Although it's good that you're putting the question out there, it really is a case of trial and error. We all respond to treatments so differently. What works for one will do nothing for another.

My article that Karina referenced is from 2016. It was the year I was diagnosed with IBS. Almost everything I mentioned is now different! Over the past 7 years since my diagnosis, my IBS has become a moving target. It morphed from IBS-C to IBS-D, then to IBS-M, and now it has returned to a more stubborn version of IBS-C. Unlike my experience in the article, senna no longer works. I do still avoid Miralax, though. It gave me "mud butt" and never felt that it cleaned me out.

So, what do I do for constipation now? Stool softeners. Lately they aren't enough, though. I took a dulcolax earlier this week, and it thoroughly cleaned me out! It was like doing bowel prep for a colonoscopy! And while it ended with diarrhea, then clearn yellow liquid, I didn't have the post-diarrhea bloating/distention and pain. The takeaway? Try everything in my arsenal until I find something that breaks the log jam.

Here's hoping you'll soon find a treatment that quiets your bowel. Cheers, Kim

      1. Do not that senna or ingredients with aloe. Yes, they help you get cleaned out.,but those are also a GI irritant. My gastro said do not take senna if you are getting a colonoscopy. It stains the inside walls in there and cannot see polyps if there. Linzess works and is safer. Only issue with that is, can cause sudden urges to go after you eat. So make sure you will be near a restroom or be wearing a diaper just in case you can't make it. Better to be safe than sorry. There were multiple instances I couldn't make it in time.

        1. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm glad that Linzess seems to be working for you. Has your doctor said anything about Senna when it's not taken before a colonoscopy?
