Right side Twinge/Spasms/Lower Back pain

Hi all.

I've been experiencing the above symptoms constantly everyday for months some days worse than others. I've had bloods, stool & Urine samples all taken twice in the last 6 months and all came back clear.

I don't get any diarrhea or constipation just the spasms and the right side twinge. Sometimes I feel a burning sensation in the lower back. Not sure if this is related to sciatica which I get from time to time.

My GP says it was looking like IBS If all tests/samples come back clear which they did.

I don't know what it is about GPs but he didn't arrange another appointment with me to talk through whether it was IBS or not. So waiting for a call back next week because that GP has now left the practice. If I didn't force the issue and ask for an appointment they wouldn't bother phoning me back because results were satisfactory.

Does anyone else experience these symptoms? Because I'm not convinced that it's IBS. But then I've never had it before. I do tend to get a lot of stomach bugs when I go abroad.

My mother told me that my Grandmother would always get a similar symptom of a right side twinge as she would call it, and she said it was IBS. I would say mines is a Twinge along with spasms & lower back pain. Sometimes particularly when walking home from somewhere I feel the need to go to the bathroom and is a struggle to hold it in. I've been taking Buscopan which doesn't seem to do anything.

My diet is healthy. Lots of veg, Chicken, rice, pasta particularly wholemeal

  1. Any chance its a kidney stone? I had similar symptoms before I found out it was stone. A simple ultrasound from a Urologist will confirm it. Otherwise might be just some muscle spasms. I'd ask the Urologist then if that comes back negative maybe a muscle relaxer and see if that helps?

    1. The GP initially thought it was gallstones but after I've an ultrasounds. Last one in February 2024 and results are back satisfactory and no gallstones or kidney stones.

  2. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this pain, it sounds so uncomfortable. 🙁
It’s a good idea to follow up with your doctor and see if there are any other tests they could do.
As for right-side pain, it can be a symptom of IBS, as described in these forums: 1) https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/right-side-pain, 2) https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/upper-right-abdomen-pain, for example.
I hope you’ll get some answers soon, please don’t stop advocating for yourself! Especially of you don’t feel comfortable with the IBS diagnosis.

    1. Yeah feel OK about it. Probably relieved it's not anything worse. He told me to start cutting gluten from my diet. I'm also cutting out caffeine because I did drink a lot of strong coffee and after two days without I do see an improvement

    2. That sounds like a good start! Coffee and gluten are pretty common triggers. Especially gluten was a big one for me, I started feeling so much better after cutting it out of my diet. I hope it helps you, too.
Please keep us updated on how it goes for you!
