New Dx

Hello,

I was diagnosed with IBD-M months ago and I feel so lost in the diet/FODMAP information. I don't know which foods trigger me just yet and I don't know where to start in order to start feeling a bit better. I feel like everything is on the do not eat lists!

Does anyone have any advice? I often wake up in the morning gassy and bloated, constipated for a few days and then have severe stomach pain and urgent diarrhea.

Also have read that anxiety can play a part and have anxiety attacks 3-5 times a week, unsure if related but tips would be appreciated.

  1. Hi , I'm so sorry that you're struggling so much. Getting diagnosed with IBS is hard, especially when you have no idea what triggers your symptoms.
Have you tried keeping a food diary yet? I found that to be very helpful in the beginning. You can write down everything you eat as well as how you're feeling, and then track your symptoms to try and figure out any correlations.
You could also start by cutting out gluten and dairy for a week or two, as these are common triggers for many people (but not all).
I'm also going to share the following article with you: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/first-three-steps-ibs-treatment
Whenever I need to just start feeling better, I eat an extremely bland diet (like white rice and chicken) for a while.
Anxiety can absolutely trigger symptoms all on its own, this always happens to me!
Here's an article about it that might interest you: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/gut-brain-connection
I recently started doing hypnotherapy for my IBS (just using an app) and it seems to help a lot with that.
    I hope this helps!

    1. Thank you so much for your feedback! It’s hard to talk about something so personal with family or friends, so I really appreciate it. I just started a food journal yesterday and cutting out big ticket triggers to see what’s going on! Thank you for the articles!

      1. Good luck! I hope the food journal will reveal some truths to help you out! Best, Elizabeth (team member)

    2. Hi. I’m new here also. Was diagnosed with IBS-M about 6 months ago. I rarely had more than 2 or 3 days between flare ups. I started the low fodmap regimen, kept a food diary and finally identified my triggers. The process took several weeks, but it has changed my life. I downloaded an app on my phone for quick look up of possible triggers. Good luck getting yours sorted out.
