IBS & Sensitivity

Hello, I am new to the group. Diagnosed with IBS-D, I am lactose intolerant, with wheat sensitivity. My biggest problem is anything with onion or garlic & natural sugars. Add to this I have severe diverticulosis. So the diets for IBS & Diverticulosis contradict each other. I've lost 15 pounds & can't seem to gain it back. My diet mostly consists of non dairy protein shakes, lots of eggs, baked fish no batter & chicken. The only vegetable I can eat is green bean. I used an app called "Spoonful" to check all foods I purchase.

I had a horrific flare early March that lasted for weeks & had colonoscopy end of March. Symptoms: Excessive gas & bloating, cramps that I thought were going to kill me in my intestines, diarrhea, tender stomach... just miserable. There are lots of low fodmap foods I can not eat.

My question is this: Will I ever be able to eat regular fruits/vegetables and seasonings again?

We are into mid June now & whenever I TRY something such as bread, pasta, seasonings, fruits, veggies it is a matter of about 4-5 hours and I immediately regret it.

I take prebiotics, fiber supplements & I take Dicyclomine I take whenever I feel the symptoms starting.

  1. Welcome to our community. Thank you for sharing and reaching out. So sorry you are going through so much. Be sure to speak with your doctor about any new, changing or concerning symptoms, if you haven't already. Perhaps you could ask about seeing a GI specialist Dietitian as well to help you navigate the diet piece and strategize ways to broaden your intake and avoid nutrient deficiencies. In addition to speaking with your doctor, this article may be helpful: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/underlying-causes-diarrhea Wishing you some relief ahead. 1. So, I have IBS-D too, lactose intolerant, severe gluten sensitivity to boot. I did an extreme food elimination diet and food a whole list of foods that bother me. Some I can tolerate in moderation, others, like ANY grain (wheat, rye, barley, oats, corn, etc) I can't tolerate AT ALL. Wheat was always the worst, I mean, being stabbed by a knife pain. FODMAP diet didn't work for me, AT ALL. It is worse than useless for many of us (glad it works for some!). You need to find your sensitivities by eliminating everything but what you know you can eat without issue for 4 weeks. Yep, serious will power and dedication! Then ONE food at a time, eat ONE food in raw form (like corn, not corn flakes cereal) everyday for 7 days and you'll know within 7 days if it bothers you. Some sensitivities take several days worth of eating before it "builds up" enough to bother you. For me, wheat is within a few hours. Rice 3 days. Corn 5 days.
Luckily, a lot of things that bother you (like gluten and/or grains) aren't healthy anyways. We are NOT grass eaters, we are meat & veggie eaters. Sometimes we must do what our body yells at us. And it has to yell because otherwise we don't listen because yummy food is too hard to say no to! 😀

      1. Appreciate you sharing this and part of our journey with discovering what foods work or don't work well for you. Sounds like you've made some great progress in identifying you sensitivities. Wishing you the best, Kelly Irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team Member
