IBS-D Alternative from Antidepressants

Hi All I've been suffering with IBS-D for 4 years now and have been on a 50mg dose of amitriptyline which has actually worked really well for managing symptoms but have come with some severe side effects. For the last year or so I've felt very disassociated and empty so I'm taking action to change my treatment plan. Can anyone suggest any medication they are currently on for IBS-D that isn't an antidepressant as unfortunately the doctor's have simply told me "Do some research and tell us what medication you would like to try".

  1. So sorry that you have so many side effects from your current medication. It seems a bit strange to me that your doctors have asked you to do the research yourself, aren't they supposed to know what kind of medication exists? Have you tried getting a second opinion from another doctor?
We do have an article all about medication for IBS-D here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/medications. I hope other community members will be able to share what works for them. For me personally, medication never really worked for my IBS-D... Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)
