Ibs affecting my whole life

I guess i had ibs earlier too ,but it was undiagnosed and manageable ,i would say in past few years there were rare flare ups and never any when i was younger . In my 20s now .developed ibs a severe one a few months ago .makes it so difficult to work ,go out or socialise .havinb therapy ,trying out different medicines ,going to gi .nothing is working . Feel like i am stinking all the time . There are frequent bowel moments and having ibs m doesn't help much .it pains a lot . Can't even sit in a room . Was embarrased a lot .people have started avoiding me ,a lot , and i get it .but it hurts a lot .

  1. I know how IBS is such a downer and how it does take over our lives and I hate it for that. I am sorry you are going through this. Is there anything you take or do which can help you at all?
One thing I cannot forgive IBS for is its unpredictable relentless nature. Eating all the right foods that don't cause upset...then suddenly a flare up comes! Or (as with me) having periods of time when things steady out and I can feel okay, but oh no...IBS always has to come back, over and over again.

I do hope you find something to help you. Yes, it can be difficult to live in a carefree way with IBS.

    1. You're very welcome, I hope it'll help you figure out some of your triggers! Karina (team member)

    2. hope so

  2. I'm so, so sorry that you're going through this. My IBS also got really bad in my 20s and the only thing that helped was a complete lifestyle change. I quit my job, moved to a small town, started working from home. Without the constant stress, I started feeling so much better. Medication never worked for me, but the Low FODMAP diet did help me manage. I also got a lot better after cutting out gluten completely.
Did you try working with a specialized dietitian yet? Or even seeing a naturopath? Some community members had success with that.
Do you have friends or family who support you? I also lost a lot of friends due to IBS, that's so hard.

  3. Yes I know, IBS can be the actual major thing which causes stress. I was lucky in that my IBS started when I was in my mid 60s and already retired. So basically I don't have a lot of stress in my life, but when I get IBS "attacks" it always causes me a sense of anxiety. The "anxiety" seems to be feedback from my body and how it feels, rather than from my mind itself. Because when my gut is steady I usually am not an anxious person.

But it can work both ways; anxiety can cause an upset gut which feeds anxiety to the brain, and back again in a loop!
I wonder if there are any ways of dealing with or managing anxiety generally in yourself or coping with what life throws at you...maybe with cognitive behavioural therapy, hypnotherapy, or meditation? I do believe general anxiety can be managed quite well with the right approach that suits you. Otherwise it can be like a wild horse that runs away with us.

    1. I also hope that therapy works for you! Maybe it's not the right time to do the hypnotherapy app as well if you're already working with another therapist. I would probably just stick with one approach at a time. Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)

    2. thank you so much .

  4. Did anyone else mention Viberzi? It's the only thing that's worked for me. After 7 years on it, it's not quite as effective as before, but still helpful. Unfortunately, it can be expensive, depending on your insurance.

    1. Thank you for sharing that, I'm glad that it helps you! Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)
