HELP. TRIGGER WARNING

I am in the midst of a flare up and today at 5pm I tried an Atkins chocolate bar. At 7pm I also had some slow cooked meat that was cooked with mushrooms, although my wife removed the actual mushrooms when she served it up. Now at 8.30pm, I am all bloated (I look 9 months pregnant), farty and will definitely have diarrhoea. Which was more likely the trigger. The chocolate Atkins bar, or the meat cooked in mushrooms all day?

  1. I'm so sorry that you're going through this. Flares are so frustrating and it can be impossible to know what exactly caused them. I've had flares after eating white rice before, my ultimate safe food. Stress, anxiety, lack of sleep, and so on can also be huge triggers.
To find out which foods mostly trigger your symptoms, I would suggest you keep a food diary where you write down everything you eat as well as the symptoms. This can really help you to identify patterns, even though it's still not an exact science. As for this particular episode, I would simply focus on taking care of yourself so you get better fast.

    1. It is so hard to pin down what causes a flare! I have had flares sometimes when not even being super-adventurous with food. Sometimes they are just destined to happen anyway, and I have no idea why.
I know though, that I have not been able to tolerate mushrooms since January 2020! I love them too, but too bad. I daren't risk it.
Maybe there was also another ingredient in the (I'm sure really tasty) slow cooked meat your wife made?
      ...Some herb? Garlic? Onion?
I am, strangely, okay with chocolate. But not everyone is. It can also depend on the chocolate. Not all choc. has the same ingredients. Mine is pretty all-natural, but is a milk chocolate, so contains lactose etc. But for some reason it never upsets me. Thank goodness!! But some contain awful trans-fats, additives, sorbitol etc.
Hoping it doesn't take too long to come out of your flare. Take care.

      1. I agree, some flares are just destined to happen anyway!
Have you noticed that the quantity of chocolate you consume has an influence on your symptoms? I'm just asking because I can also have some chocolate, but if I get carried away and eat too much, I will most likely get some symptoms or even a flare.
As for mushrooms, I'm sorry you can't have them! They seem to be alright for me, but it really depends on how they're cooked. Onions and garlic can definitely trigger a flare. Sending hugs, Karina (team member)
