Help for dealing

My husbands family is planning on going out on a pontoon boat for a few hours on the 4th of July (I’m American). What are some ways I can cope with my newly diagnosed ibs-d? The family doesn’t know my issue. I’m terrified of having an accident on the boat.

  1. OMG, I know people who don't have IBS, and who were mortified at the prospect of spending hours on a pontoon boat! Yikes!

That said, here's what I do when I know I'll be away for hours and I've been suffering with bouts of D: I constipate myself by taking either two Imodium, or two Saccharomyces boulardii capsules. That has always stopped the diarrhea immediately and for the rest of the day, usually stretching well into the next day or even the day after that. Why didn't I take just one pill? Tried it and it didn't work at that dosage, so I doubled it. Mission accomplished. Isn't that always the way? So if you haven't already, you might try constipating yourself to get through the day. Then deal with the aftermath later when you have alone time.

That's all I got. Let's hope others will eventually chime in too. I wish you oodles of luck with finding what works 😀

      1. This is just my personal experience, but I no longer force myself to do things that cause me so much anxiety and that I don't actually want to do. So, if you're really excited about the boat trip, I would try what Kim has suggested and also probably fast beforehand, even the evening before. However, if you would prefer to stay home, I would just do that. Being around people who don't know about your IBS and having to act normal even though you're experiencing symptoms is not easy, and I personally prefer being open about my struggles (especially if it's family) and only participating in activities that feel doable to me. That's just me though! Karina (team member)

        1. Thank you both. The situation has taken care of itself as the event got cancelled for now.

          1. Great news. I conquer with Karina. If you have a lot of anxiety or stress over it, don't go. But if you are excited then, eat only safe foods the day before and day of. Have an emergency bag packed just in case of any accident. -Elizabeth (team member)

          2. Glad to hear that! I hope you'll be able to enjoy the day with a more IBS-friendly activity. All the best, Karina (team member)
