FODMAP for IBS - What's your experience?

Has anyone been on the FODMAP diet for relief of IBS symptoms? I recently went to see a gastroenterologist because my diarrhea symptoms were getting more severe. She went into great detail to explain the FODMAP diet to me, and the reasons why it works for most IBS sufferers.
I have only been on this food plan for two weeks, but have had great success so far, although I was told it is not meant for long term.
I am wondering what experiences other people may have had with FODMAP.

  1. That's a great question! I think most of the people here have tried the Low FODMAP diet at one point or another. I know that many swear by it while others didn't see much of a difference. It's great that it seems to work for you!
For me, it helped a lot at first but I ended up cutting out too many foods and never re-introducing them, which wasn't the best. When I started working from home and not being as scared of flares anymore, I noticed that there were many foods I thought were triggers that I could actually eat. And then, cutting out gluten and also addressing my anxiety (which is my biggest trigger) also helped me feel a lot better. So to me, the diet was basically a great starting point, but I don't follow it anymore because many high FODMAP foods do work for me and some low FODMAP options don't.
In case you're interested, we have this article: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/low-fodmap-research on some newer research about the Low FODMAP diet as well.
I hope other community members will chime in soon!

    1. , thank you for the info. I am new to this group, and wasn't aware of all the useful information about IBS. I've been doing lots of reading, and gaining lots of helpful information.
Recent tests show that I have fructose malabsorption, and also SIBO. So far, FODMAP has been very helpful. Now, I am just starting the reintroduction phase, so anxious to see how that goes.
      Again, thanks for the info.

    2. I'm glad to hear that you're finding the information on here useful!
We also have info about fructose malabsorption: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/low-fodmap-monosaccharides and SIBO: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/sibo-prescriptions if you want to read them. It's good that your doctor was able to figure out you have these. Have you discussed your SIBO treatment plan yet?
Please keep us updated on the reintroduction phase!
Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)
