Experiences with Nortriptyline HCL for IBS-C?

Has anybody been prescribed Nortriptyline HCL for IBS with Constipation? If yes, did it help?

  1. I have a prescription for Nortriptyline HC 10MG but read the side affects and have not used it. I use Bentyl and it helps the pain and doesn't make you tired and have the brain side affects. I am so sensitive to medications. Just small amounts. I was prescribed Lyrica and I took it for 2 days and was so tired and just out of it. The doctor said ok it takes a few weeks to get use to. I told her it was not for me. I just started Motegrity 10 mg and I hope it is to help the colon move the poop. I have taken it 3 days and have had a couple of poop's with out using an enema or suppository. I so hope this helps. This is a wonderful site. I still wake up around 3 am every night with pain but it is not as bad and as is has been. Take care

    1. Motegrity sounds promising for you! I hope it'll continue to help and alleviate the pain you have every night. Please keep us updated. Hopefully, other people will share their experiences with Nortriptyline with you soon.

  2. yes, I have used Nortriptyline. It helped a little and then it just stopped working for me. I was also always hungry while on it which caused weight gain but also, the additional eating was counterproductive to dealing with IBS pain and symptoms. We’ve tried other antidepressants but it either made me too loopy, exacerbated urinary retention or both. I’m very sensitive to the meds they prescribe me and meds usually swing my symptoms into the other direction.

    1. Thank you so much for sharing! I'm sorry you're so sensitive to medication, that makes it even harder. 🙁 Did you end up finding another way to manage your symptoms?

  3. No, I haven’t. It’s really down to juggling meds to minimize how much my symptoms swing the other direction. My GI feels that after so many infections, there’s probably extensive nerve damage and that they’re just going to focus on treating pain now. I am currently checking out getting an appointment with Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland. I’ve been to Mayo in Jacksonville, FL but they’re really Mayo in name only. I’m hoping a better medical community can help me. Florida doesn’t have the best doctors.

    1. I'm so sorry, that's sounds very hard. 🙁 I hope you'll be able to get an appointment and see a better doctor who'll be able to help.
      Please keep us updated.
