Diagnosis for IBS

After the menopause I experienced many changes, physical and emotional. The one thing I don't understand is IBS. I had never experienced this earlier in life and now a dietician suggested I had IBS. I followed the FODMAP specification, but have had no other tests.
Has anyone been diagnosed through a blood test or other means?

  1. Sorry you are dealing with this. For diagnosis, there is no blood test for IBS. However, a doctor may do blood tests to rule out other things like Celiac Disease, infections etc. Here is an article that goes over diagnosing IBS: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/testing-and-diagnosis

For me personally, I was experiencing intense symptoms. My GI had me do a colonoscopy with biopsy. I was then diagnosed with Crohn's Disease and IBS.

    1. Thank you. I am having a colonoscopy in December. Hopefully I will get a more definitive diagnosis.

      1. I really hope so, too! Please keep us updated after your colonoscopy.
For me, doctors also did lots of tests (blood work, stool tests etc.) so rule out anything else and then diagnosed me with IBS.
How did the Low FODMAP diet work for you?

      2. I also wanted to add a link to this forum about IBS and menopause: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/confused-menopause-lady. In the comments, you'll find other links to articles and forums that might be helpful. Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)
