Complicated case

Hi everyone,

I’m new to this site. I was diagnosed with ibs but I think it’s more than that.

The main problem that started about April 2020 is nausea and trapped wind in my stomach, if I relieve the wind the nausea generally goes away. I sometimes get acid reflux and heartburn.

I also have had issues to varying degrees with an eating disorder since I was 13 (I’m 41 now) I had anorexia, and wouldn’t like the idea of food in my system so I would manually evacuate (with medical gloves) to check I was empty. I wonder if I have damaged my lower bowel doing this as I now sometimes “need” to manually evacuate to empty my bowels. I also take 2 senna a day and “feel” I have to do that to go to the toilet.

I also feel weak and fatigued and like I could faint a lot. I wonder if it is connected. The worst thing is the nausea, I’m scared to go into public places in case I’m sick.

  1. Hi and welcome to our community. I'm so sorry that you're dealing with that, having nausea all the time is terrible. Have you had all the tests done before being diagnosed with IBS? Have you had a colonoscopy/endoscopy and a SIBO test? If not, I would maybe ask for those just to be sure.
This is just an idea (I'm obviously not a doctor) but could it be that your acid reflux and nausea are related somehow? I just did a quick Google search and it seems that some people believe that it could be related to low stomach acid production, which can happen with eating disorders. Have you ever tried taking digestive bitters or bitter herbs before meals to see if that helps?
Hopefully, other community members will chime in soon. Hugs, Karina (team member)

    1. Thanks for responding. I’ve had a few tests done but my case a working process that has a few different symptoms and causes to it. I’ll look into your suggestions thanks and encourage the medical people I’m speaking to do more tests. I’ll try the bitters you mentioned. It’s interesting you said low stomach acid production, I’ve been responding to my problems like I have too much acid but good point, it might be the opposite. I’ll take all this on board and do some research. Thanks 😊

      1. I hope your research and hopefully some additional tests will help you get answers soon! Please keep us updated, if you like. Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)

    2. Hi everyone-My name is Shirley and I have suffered from IBS since I was 20.I am going to be 77 in July! I started taking Align probiotics a few years ago and noticed they have helped. In my case I would say stress is the cause of my flare ups.My husband died 24 years ago, my son who was in the RCMP died 12 years ago plus I have had 7 hip replacements since age 30 when the dr.put the cement in and it all went into my pelvic area instead of the area holding the prothesis! I am reading up on mindfullness to try and relax more.Sometimes the food/ snacks I crave are what causes my flareups.Would you say that you worry about everyone and everything ? Hope this helps. Shirley

      1. Hi Shirley, thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I'm so sorry that you've been through so much. Stress is a major trigger for so many of us. I also have anxiety in addition to IBS and they always trigger each other. Have you effective found ways to help you manage stress so far? Karina (team member)
