Animal fats versus plant fats

I find that fatty meats and greasy fried foods tend to flare up my IBS symptoms eg bloating, fullness, pain etc but plant based fats ie Avocado, peanut butter etc do absolutely nothing to me. Anybody else find the same?

  1. I find that if i have diarrhea the animal fats slow down the digestion process which can sometimes be a relief

    1. I feel the same way when it comes to fatty meats. Steak is always a safe food for me! However, just like , I do get very bloated when I eat fried foods. I'm usually fine with things like avocado and olive oil though, but I wonder if that's because I naturally just eat less of them than fries, for example.
You're definitely not the only one struggling with fats though!
Here's an article you might find interesting: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/food/cut-down-fat-enjoyed-eating
Also, this article mentions greasy foods as a common trigger:

  2. Oh yes, same here. I don't know the scientific answer as to why, but I definitely am able to digest them better without any symptoms. -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. I don't eat meats, so haven't tried that. But I do eat fish and have been fine with the oily kind, mostly (unless I'm already in a bit of a flare, in which case most foods disagree with me.) Fresh, wild caught salmon is usually fine for me, cooked with the skin on, and juicy. Canned sardines are OK at times.
I am fine with butter also. I can eat as much butter as I like.

But avocado can be a bit difficult. I don't seem to have got much better with that either. About a year or more ago I could eat a decent amount of it, now can only eat a slice about !/2 inch thick if I'm lucky.
But I recently found out something about it. It contains natural sorbitol, so maybe that's what gets me.

Oddly, I am fine with milk chocolate too! Yes, weird, I know.

Peanuts can be tricky. I found out up to 32 peanuts are low Fodmap.
So I experimented and ate way more. Uh-oh...
I ate a few -fine. I ate up to 30 -fine.
That's strange because I can eat some high Fodmaps with no problem. But with peanuts I have to stick to the limit. Same with peanut butter (I love it.)

Chips (fries) cooked in nothing but sunflower oil are OK for me I discovered. But I ate Tofu once from a store, and it had some oil of some kind on it and that upset my gut. I have no idea what oil it was.

I have no happy instinct about Olive oil. It might be OK. I just don't feel like trying it. Same with coconut oil.

So fats are okay, and not all of them vegan. But avocados and peanuts can get me sometimes if I eat more than I should.

      1. Thanks for sharing with us! This is great insight. So interesting to read how certain foods effect each person differently. Glad to hear you are figuring out what works for you and experimenting. Appreciate you commenting. best, Kelly, Irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team member
