Low stomach acid - Fact or Fiction

I’m interested to see if any of the members here gives credence to the idea that low stomach acid is one of the contributing factors to conditions like IBS and SIBO?

I’ve looked through articles on the net and it seems to be a theory that has garnered a lot of support but there’s little to no evidence that many people have it or that it is a factor in SIBO or IBS.

I’m terms of myself, I’ve done the baking soda test at home and I’ve burped within 5 seconds of taking it, so I assume there’s absolutely no problem with my stomach acid.
I think the jury is out on this theory, one wonders why PPIs and antacids (as limited as they are) still give relief to a lot of people - if the main problem they had is low stomach acid, these drugs would exacerbate the condition not help it. Thoughts?

  1. I wonder about the stomach acid idea too. I did the baking soda test, and it took me 8 minutes to burp!
But then I read about some guy who had done the test himself, and tried it all the members of his family (who all had healthy digestion) and the results were different with each person.
Anyway, I then observed my body's reactions to digesting proteins. I don't eat meat but tested it with fish and had a large-ish amount as a test. I had no problem whatsoever digesting it in a decent amount of time, so everything seemed natural there. I did not give me indigestion or sit in my stomach too long.
I concluded that my stomach acid was fit for purpose.

But I am sure there are people with low stomach acid. I can imagine that being a problem for proper digestion.

I have heard from various IBS sufferers that some of them say their IBS does feel a bit worse on PPI's. But not everyone, and there could be other reasons.
