Do you find that soda (or other carbonated drinks) triggers your IBS?

For some people living with IBS, soda and other carbonated beverages can trigger or worsen symptoms.

Does this happen to you? If so, what is your experience?
Have you found satisfying alternatives?

  1. When I drink sodas it makes me burp, but I don't think it triggers any symptoms of IBS.

    1. That's exactly how I react to drinking sodas: I burp a lot, but it doesn't seem to do much else. Thank you for telling us your experience! Hugs, Kim, moderator

    2. artificial sweeteners trigger it.

  2. I am in bed from drinking a carbonated beverage . I am in agony a horrible flare. Once in a while maybe a few times a year I have one . I generally stay close to fodmap and consumed a natural blackberry carbonated drink . Omg so much pain. Thank you for bringing it up .

    1. The only carbonated drink I ever want or have is sparkling mineral water. I have never found that it upsets me at all. But, I do have to be careful which one I can have. They all vary as to their mineral content, Some have higher levels of bicarbonate, magnesium etc. I found that the ones with very high bicarbonate or very high magnesium don't suit me. But some have lower levels and those are fine.
So it doesn't seem to be the sparkles, but differing levels of minerals that I have to be a bit careful of.
There is one, called Aqua Pura which is my favourite and is perfect for me..
I can have magnesium in foods with no problem but if I drink water high in magnesium it doesn't suit me.
But magnesium glycinate as a supplement is OK.

      1. It's funny, we actually have an article on this very subject: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/food/soda-trigger It deals with some of the triggers of IBS, including carbonated sodas. It seems like people with IBS do get triggered on the regular from sodas. I try to stay away from them myself but every now and then I just want one with fries or something (not that I eat fries very much either, ha ha). You are not alone, though, that's for sure. Keep on keepin' on, DPM

    2. I know what you mean! I used to love Coca Cola but am not sure what it would do to me now so never drink it. Sparkling water is OK for me though, and my favourite drink.
And fries! I like those very much too. Sometimes they suit me sometimes they don't. I have a simple frozen kind with just sunflower oil and potato. Those are usually OK for me (if my body is in a mood where it will be able to tolerate potatoes).
But potatoes cooked in any way at all, even mashed with nothing added, very often don't suit me. They act like a laxative for me most times.
