Hi,
I find that the anxiety of maybe have a flare up makes matters worse. I am flying to CA with two small children already filled with anxiety before my stomach issues. Any over the counter anxiety med work? Heard Dramamine

  1. Hi ,
I relate so much to your post, having anxiety and two small children myself.

We've had a similar forum about anxiety medication here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/anyone-take-anxiety-meds, I hope the replies under it will be helpful.

While I haven't personally found anything to take away the anxiety before traveling, I've found that eating only very safe foods the 2 days before and then taking Imodium before leaving helps me a lot. Usually, the stress makes me flare as soon as I wake up anyway, so I can wait out part of the flare and then stop it with the Imodium, if that makes sense.

We also have articles about traveling with IBS here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/traveling-ibs-expect-best-plan-worst, and here: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/travel-tips-for-ibs-sufferer. You could bring lots of activities for your children so they'll hopefully be occupied and let you focus on yourself.

Please let me know if this is helpful!
Hopefully, other community members will chime in soon.

    1. Traveling for me is helped by drinking ginger tea w/ prebiotic and peppermint tea with Benefiber. I also limit my caffeine intake, red meat which can be a trigger, and resting when I can.
It's not always easy but I enjoy traveling with my family.

      1. I’m glad you’re able to enjoy traveling with your family despite IBS! Thanks so much for sharing what works for you.
Are you traveling anywhere this summer?
