Testing for IBS

I was diagnosed decades ago with IBS by GI doctor based on symptoms. Since that diagnosis, each GI doctor (2) has accepted that diagnoses. When asked about testing, I’m told my symptoms indicate IBS. However, when I read articles in this site and on medical sites, my issues don’t match. I have moderate diverticulitis and constant flatulence. No bloating, no cramping, no diarrhea, no constipation. I do have food allergies, which I try to avoid but diary and eggs (2 of several) are in so many recipes and prepared foods. So to my original question, are there specific tests for IBS? Thank you!

  1. Great question. Unfortunately, there is no one test for IBS. Here is an article that further explains this: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/testing-and-diagnosis

I hope this offers more insight for you. Let us know if you have anymore questions.

    1. Thank you. The articles are helpful. I’m a solution to the problem personality. I’ve tried everything mentioned in the articles except antidepressants. Since I haven’t “felt” depressed, I didn’t consider antidepressants. Have you or any other IBS patients tried antidepressants? Has it helped?

      1. Oddly enough, I was given Valium one time after leaving a two week stay at the hospital. I only took it for about a week but in that week I saw quite an improvement in my IBS symptoms. My major symptom is urgency and that dramatically decreased. However, I didn't really like how I felt on the Valium, so I stopped. -Elizabeth (team member)

      2. I'm glad these articles are helping! I haven't personally tried anti-depressants specifically for IBS, but maybe we can get some others to chime in! ~Michaela (irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team Member)

    2. That is interesting. Years ago my doctor prescribed Elavil. He told me it was non-addictive. I didn’t take it. Decided I would deal with the situation, divorced the problem. I wonder if a low dose of Elavil might have the same effect? I’ll ask my doctor and share here.

      1. Yes, definitely ask your doctor! We'd love to hear what you find out. ~Michaela (irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team Member)
