Severe abdominal pain

I have been dealing with IBS for many years but of late I am experiencing something new. It may be food related but I am wanting to see if this bothers others. For the last two evenings beginning around 8 pm and lasting roughly 6 hours I have had severe abdomen pain. Gas, bloating, pressure and a pain I can't seem to relieve . I try heat, massage, gas relief meds and walking but no help. Then roughly 6 hours later the pain has disappeared and I can finally get some sleep. My question is is this something others have experienced with IBS or is it perhaps something else.
I've been told the body expels gas through belching, flatulence and also naturally. I am soon to be 80 years old and I find more good advice on this site rather than the doctors office. All information on line says to call your doctor but I think I was about 5 years old when doctors took phone calls. Thank you for listening.

  1. Hi James I have exactly the same symptoms and some days the gas and bloating are never ending. Heat packs and lying in my left side tend to help but I also have valium as it helps my bowel relax, maybe ask your gp?

    1. I too have so much gas bloating and pain bad enough to use a strong pain killer above my daily pain meds I don't know what else to do

      1. I'm so sorry you're dealing with such bad pain. You're not alone. It's usually a good idea to get new symptoms checked out by a doctor, although I completely understand why you're hesitant to go there. It can be extremely frustrating to get doctors to take our IBS and symptoms seriously...
I'm going to link this page about chronic pain for you: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/chronic-pain, I hope you'll find it helpful.

        1. I occasionally have that happen as well and I have found I get the best relief by using my TENS unit set on a very low massage setting. I use four pads placed on the sides of my abdomen top and bottom and leave it on for 30 minutes. In combination with Alka-Seltzer and Gas-X, this typically does the trick. I don't like using Miralax, but find that using it 1-2 times per week when I am having a flare is beneficial.

          1. Hey , Thanks so much for sharing! That's a great idea to use a TENS machine in combination with some over the counter remedies. I'm glad you found a solution that helps! Would you mind sharing where you bought your TENS machine? Warm thoughts, Kat (Team Member)
