Proctalgia Fugax - Anyone Get Symptoms of This?

Proctalgia Fugax is a muscle spasm in the rectal area that can be associated with IBS and can be very painful. It comes out of nowhere and normally happens at night. To me it is like having a Charlie horse cramp in your rectum, but the pain comes and goes. I normally experience the pain for about 30 seconds to a minute and then the pain subsides for about 2 to 3 minutes and then returns. This can go on for up to 2 hours.

Luckily, I normally get the symptoms at home at night, and they wake me from a sound sleep. A remedy for me is to sit in a warm bath for about 10 minutes and the spasms simply go away.

I'm wondering if anyone else experiences this on occasion?

  1. I'm going to tag here who asked a similar question about Proctalgia Fugax a while back: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/proctalgia-fugax-attacks. You're certainly not the only one who experiences this.

    1. I think it's common for many people to get this including people without IBS. Me and my daughter call it 'shooty ar*se'. Have you tried an anti spasmodic if it goes on for a long time?

      1. if I get it I normally only get it for a minute or so but I was thinking for the OP if it was going on for a long time maybe an anti spasmodic could calm it down since it targets the smooth muscle. Might be worth asking a doctor.

      2. Yes, that sounds like it might be a good idea. Thank you for sharing! I'm glad you don't get it for very long. All the best, Karina (team member)
