Peoples anti depressant choices for IBS

Hi guys, this is my first post. I'm a 43 year old female with anxiety/IBS-D which I have had for as long as I can remember. I've recently come off escitalopram (was on it for 6 years) due to a doctor not giving me a repeat prescription as I am also on hydroxychloroquine and she was concerned about interactions. She has talked me into changing to sertraline which I'm due to start in a few weeks. Whenever you look online it says SSRI's are mainly for IBS-C as they can cause diarrhoea. My question is has anyone had any better results with certain anti depressants for IBS-D? Note I also use codeine to manage symptoms at times of high anxiety/stressful situations.

  1. Hi and welcome to our community!
While I don't have any personal experience with antidepressants, many people in this community do and have shared about it, including in this article https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/antidepressants and this one: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/medication-management-antidepressants. We also have this article: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/medications/antidepressants-how-well-it-works-and-side-effects about the different antidepressants and their use for IBS.
I hope other community members will chime in soon and share their experiences with you.
    Wishing you all the best,
