I'm not sure I have IBS - but here is what I experience

This sequence usually last 3/4 days, although this time it lasted about 8 days. It has been happening off and on for 15 years at least.

At first, I thought it might be connected with some food poisoning I had from street food in Cambodia.

My bowel motions cease and instead, I involuntarily release small amounts of liquid. The amount varies with more being released if I exercise. In the end, my bowel motions return and everything is normal until the next time.

My solution has been to use folded toilet paper in my underwear to collect the liquid. Sometimes there is also a small amount of stool released also. I had a colonoscopy 18 months ago with nothing was found. My Gastro said I just had a 'disobedient bowel'.

There is no pain or nausea and apart from making sure I am 'padded up' I can lead a normal life. My appetite is normal. If I do try to have a bowel motion, all that comes out is a small amount of liquid. Is this IBS? Thanks

  1. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this. We can't diagnose you, but IBS does come with all sorts of weird symptoms. Have you had other tests done, besides the colonoscopy? If not, I'd maybe ask for additional testing to rule out any other cause. Have you tried experimenting with your diet to see if maybe something you eat triggers this? Wishing you all the best, Karina (team member)

    1. Thanks Karina. Yes, I do need to do some more investigation. Thanks for your reply,.

      1. I hope you'll be able to figure out te triggers. All the best, Karina (team member)

    2. This might sound weird if you are a guy, but female sanitary pads will do a better job than a wad of toilet paper. They mostly have an adhesive backing so will stick to underpants well (but are easy to take off too.) They don't get all bunched-up in your butt crack!

IBS can come along with all sorts of symptoms which differ between people, so it's impossible to say , but a follow up appointment with your doctor to discuss things might help? Were you diagnosed with IBS as a result of a negative colonoscopy?

      1. Hi and thanks for the good suggestion re pads. That is the most debilitating thing which what happens to me. I intend to follow up with week with my GP. I don't think by Gastro confirmed one way or the other but I will get a referal to see her again. Thanks again.
