Hi all

I suffer from IBS/D and chronic tension headaches, was on Citalopram and Mirtazpine but cam off the Citalopram about a month ago, did come off the Mirtazpine but my IBS played up, the reason I wanted to come off both is I have put on about 3 stone in weight, I need to stop the Mirtazpine as I have been told it the biggest cause of weight gain but what else can I take, tried everything from FopMap diets probitotics, I felt great pn both drugs but the weight gain is effecting me physically and mentally, please please can anyone help me.

  1. I'm sorry to hear that you're not able to continue taking the medication that made you feel better, that's so tough. 🙁 Have you talked to your doctor about switching to another drug that wouldn't affect your weight so much?
We have an article about potential medications here:

struggled with a similar issue earlier this year, maybe they can help you out?

    1. I'll post the 2 links again since they're not clickable in my comment: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/medications, https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/help-i-cant-give-up-my-medication-and-its-giving-me-the-strangest-dreams. Sorry about that. Karina (team member)

      1. Hi ,I don't now if I can help, in the end my dreams calmed down a little and I have continue with the Mirtazapine, since everytime I try to stop the treatment my IBS gets worse. I'm doing meditation now and working with psychology books and stuff and it seems to help.

Related to this topic... I also gained weight, in my case it was good because I've always been too thin. It stabilised after a bit (I was 54kg and I'm now 60 or something like that). My experience is that in a long term treatment, the weight gain stops after a while. If I may ask,
what kind of exercise do you practice? I gained muscle instead of fat because I'm doing muscle training now. If that's not a solution for you... I know it sucks, but my only idea is to add more cardio to your routine for the time being. You see, I was so terrified the symptoms would come back that I ended up adapting myself to the Mirtazapine side effects. It works for me, for now. I don't know if anything I said helps you, I wish you good luck.
