Cholestyramine tips?

I just got diagnosed with IBS-D after 3 months of missery, bloodwork, 2 stool samples, and an endoscopy and colonoscopy. I had some abnormal results that indicated I may have IBD but after the scopes my GI landed on IBS-D. I have been put on Bentyl for the stomach cramps and that has been wonderful. As far as the diarrhea he just put me on cholestryamine twice day. It is the most disgusting, gritty, gag-worthy medicine I have ever had. It feels like you are drinking sand. I was just wondering if anyone else has been put on cholestryamine and if you had any tips or tricks to get it down? I am supposed to take it twice a day but only got one dose down yesterday and half today because I can't get past the sand texture and revolting flavor (it is supposed to be orange but it does NOT taste like orange).

  1. Apologies for the delayed reply. Glad to hear that you are finding some relief with this new treatment regimen. You are certainly not alone in struggling to take cholestryamine. I'd ask your doctor for suggestions as well. I know many mix it with a touch of warm water to dissolve it then add in some juice or mix it in a smoothie. Be sure that whatever you choose to mix it in is something that sits well with you and doesn't inadvertently cause more issues. Wishing you the best. Please let us know how you're doing, if you'd like. Kelly, Irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team member
