Medical Cannabis for IBS Symptom Relief

I’ll be honest with you folks, if it weren’t for medical cannabis, I don’t know how I would be able to function every day while dealing with IBS. That sounds like a drastic statement but trust me when I say I’ve tried many things for my condition, and medical cannabis is by far the most effective and holistic treatment for my symptoms.

Why do I use medical cannabis for IBS symptoms?

I know this is a touchy subject for some, and what works for one may not work for all. However, when I, personally, consume medical cannabis, I get more than just a high – I get relief from diarrhea, bloating, cramping, back pain, depression, anxiety, inflammation, insomnia, loss of appetite, and the list goes on. So again, I must emphasize that I don’t know how I would get by without cannabis as my medication for the symptoms I experience daily.

IBS cramping and bloating

I mentioned that I consume cannabis for many reasons, however, the two main ones are to relieve cramping and bloating. When I feel bloated, I’m almost guaranteed to feel intense cramps along with it, which makes it hard for me to be mobile when I need to be. For instance, there are times when I need to be somewhere at a specific time, and I end up moving at such a slow pace and running late because the pain is that excruciating. At moments like this, even having a bowel movement or letting out gas will not ease the sensation. Since cannabis is known to have antispasmodic chemical properties, I use it to help temporarily relieve my bloating and cramping, which allows me to move a bit faster and with much less anxiety. So, although cannabis doesn’t always completely take the pain away, it almost instantly diminishes the feeling of discomfort and pain, which is what I appreciate about it the most.

How medical cannabis helps my perspective

Another main reason why cannabis is important for managing my symptoms is that it also helps with my depression. Thanks to my condition, I am a vulnerable and raw person when it comes to sharing my story, so I don’t mind admitting that I get down on myself sometimes. I don’t enjoy the fact that I suffer from a chronic condition and that it has created obstacles for me throughout my life. Sometimes I even start to blame myself for having this syndrome. However, I quickly realize these are irrational ways of thinking that can only cause more detriment to my mental state. And, to be frank, because I can only bear so much burden with my own mental strength, there are times when I need a crutch, per se, to lift my mood. Hence, medical cannabis. When I consume cannabis when entering a depressive episode, it truly works as a light-switch. One moment I’m miserable and negative, and the next I’m happy and optimistic. In just a moment, I gain a different and positive perspective about my circumstances, which allows me to feel better in more ways than one. Cannabis creates a pharmacological effect on the body and mind that provides relief in many forms.

Medical marijuana does not work for every person

In conclusion, I wanted to share how medical cannabis has been a great staple in the management of my IBS symptoms. I use it daily for the simple fact that it is hard living with this condition and it allows me to gain some sense of relief from the physical and mental anguish I experience so often. By no means am I trying to persuade anyone to try medical cannabis or cannabis in general? I am just simply sharing what has been working for me and my condition in hopes that others can relate as well.
