Weight loss

Does IBS usually mean malabsorption of nutrients from the food we eat? Been troubling me for the past couple of years. Lost a couple of kgs and think it is due to this.

  1. You bet your pocketchange it can and does.
Ever since I developed IBS like 6 1/2 years ago, people love to note how "skinny" I have become and that I should eat more (laughable, I'd be eating 24/7 if it was up to me). Things got better over small periods of time but over the last year I had these flare-ups that point towards SIBO (the last I haven't made heads&tails of for 2 1/2 months now) and I'm at a point where my new doctor called me "malnourished" the minute she saw me without a shirt. I began to cry then and there (I used to be an athlete before all this kinda ruined my life).

    1. Yeah dude, and the worst part is I have no idea how to gain it back cos' this shit totally affects my confidence

      1. Me neither. I'm doing okay-ish with proper meal-spacing (3 meals a day with a gap of 4-5 hours in between) and I'm currently trying to go for 4 (slightly smaller) meals (~7 am/ ~11am/~3pm/~7pm) and see if that helps. My last meal today (the one I end on) is a small bowl of porridge with herbs and a slice of gluten-free bread (that's my toast-subsitution because I don't want to eat more than 2 bread-rolls per day in my current state).

    2. I hear you dude. Been trying a 5 meal day with around 2 hrs gap in between, but still envy those people who can just have a heart lunch or breakfast and digest it all lol!!😂

      1. I feel so shitty in the mornings, it's all gassy inside me and feels like a burning sensation inside, u ever feel that and if u did how did u manage it?

        1. That's great Elizabeth! But I am a vegetarian from India and most of my diet consists of wheat products like roti. Don't really what I am supposed to substitute my diet with haha

        2. That's so tough, I feel you. Do you have any gluten-free options that you could try out for a week or two? Or could you eat something like rice and potatoes instead? Cutting out wheat is so hard but for some people (me included) it makes all the difference. I was relying so much on bread and pasta for my IBS-D, until I finally developed a gluten intolerance with symptoms similar to what you're describing. Going gluten-free helped me feel so much better on a daily basis. However, other people are fine with gluten, so it's not a solution for everyone either... Karina (team member)
