Very Confused

Hello All, I’m new and will try to keep this backstory as short as possible.

I had an anxiety disorder years ago (I’d say I’m about 90% better but still probably have more than the average amount of anxiety), but it seemed to coincide with these episodes of horrific nausea and frequent bowel movements. Not diarrhoea, completely normal BMs, just about 10 a day. Between these episodes I was largely fine. I then had some blood, so was referred for a scope. I had two scopes and no indication of inflammation, however, my fecal calprotectin has always been raised. Not normal, but not IBD.

Serendipitously I ended up on antibiotics for a tooth infection which completely cured my stomach problems. This cure lasted a few months at which point I received another course from my GI dr. This lasted about 2 years. It is suspected I may have SIBO but I have also had a small bowel MRI which has returned no diagnosis.

Today, I have these episodes of nausea very rarely. However, around 8 weeks ago I suddenly developed diarrhoea, bloating, and the most awful gas I’ve ever experienced. I mean this will clear a room it is absolutely atrocious. I’ve also started suddenly having BMs at night (about 11pm onwards), and sometimes this develops into full diarrhoea with about 10 trips to the bathroom.

In short I am completely baffled as to what is happening with me. I’ve tried charcoal, probiotics, I’m gluten free. There doesn’t seem to be any link to my diet at all. It’s every single day with this massive stomach and pure sulfur gas.

I guess what I’m asking is, has anyone ever experienced anything like this?? I just cannot wrap my head around any of it (and I am a scientist which tbh makes it worse as I feel like I should have a better grip). I also would appreciate any advice at all on this gas situation as it is VERY bad

Thank you all so much for your time

  1. Hi, I am so sorry you're dealing with this. These symptoms sound very frustrating and painful. I can't offer medical advice but I can recommend that you go see a doctor to rule anything out. If you can, working with a nutritionist, one that specializes in gut health if you can find one, could be really beneficial. I hope you're able to find relief soon. All the best, Michaela (irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team Member)

    1. I have experienced the putrid gas before and for me personally it turned out to be SIBO and I even had a parasite. I ended up seeing a Naturopathic Medical Doctor and he prescribed supplements to kill off the bad bugs. I felt so much better after. The gas left and so did the bloating. Maybe try being tested again for SIBO? Also, I was told that sugar and bad carbs feed the critters so try staying away from that. I hope this helps some. Hugs, Elizabeth (team member)
