Does anyone take statins and if so does it make IBS D worse
Elizabeth Alvarez Member
I don't take Statins so I can't offer any advice, but just wanted to let you know that your question is seen, and I'm sure someone will offer some advice. In the meantime, I would definitely ask your doctor about it too. Best, Elizabeth (team member)

I am currently on a statin and for the past 2 weeks I’ve not taken them daily like I had been.I’ve noticed an improvement in my stomach and bowel issues,I had been sick and was taking steroids and antibiotics but since the infection cleared up I feel normal. I know the steroids and antibiotics helped but I’ve been off them and I still feel normal so I think the statin was really messing me up,I’m going to talk to my doctor about it when I see her next month but until then I’m just not going to take them every day.

This is something that I’m very qualified to answer. If be been on and off statins since I was 20yo (I have Familial HyperCholestrolemia) and I’m 57 now. Statins can definitely make IBS-D worse for a lot of people. The leaflet that comes with the meds says that it can cause flatulence and diarrhoea. I’ve tried five different statins and the one that affected me least in that way was pravastatin.
