Releif from symptoms

Hi everyone. First post on this website. My IBS-D started years ago after a bad intestinal infection. I am not medically qualified, what I am very good at is research, joining the dots and problem solving. I have had just about every symptom posted on this site and know how traumatic and life changing these symptoms are. Up until four weeks ago I was suffering daily with symptoms, as I write I am virtually symptom free, and would like to share with you how I arrived here. Here is a list of foods I have completely taken out of my diet. 1) GLUTEN containing foods, wheat, barley and rye(gluten is responsible for my symptoms, I felt so much better afterwards.). 2) MALTODEXTRINE, I have found this in barbecue chicken, sausages and vitamin pills, ( having felt better for a week after excluding gluten from diet, I ate barbecue chicken, my symptoms came back and took four days to clear, having looked at the ingredients and saw this in capital letters as a warning to allergy sufferers, I avoided foods containing this, and felt better again, be aware, this is not always highlighted, so always check ingredients carfully.). 3)OATS, unsure as to whether this contains gluten, but may be produced in a factory that makes gluten products,( if you are taking oats for its fibre content, try high fibre fruits and dark vegetables, or probiotics to feed your friendly bacteria). 3)PASTA, avoid this unless specified as gluten free. 4)SOY SAUSE, soya beans are fermented together with roasted WHEAT and YEAST. 5)YEAST EXTRACT, the by-product of beer, which is made using WHEAT and BARLEY, this can be found in food, unless specified as gluten free, avoid, at least for the time being. 2 supplement I have found easies discomfort. PEPPERMINT OIL, relaxes intestinal muscles, use gastro resistant capsules that release into intestine not stomach. L - GLUTAMINE is a supplement, GLUTAMINE is produced naturally by the body using proteins from meat, it binds cells tightly together, this is important for the intestinal wall as it keeps the contents of faeces especially if it contains gluten from penetrating into the intestinal wall. There is a belief that a deficiency of GLUTEMINE produced by the body, possibly through illness/infection the cells are not bound together tight enough to prevent holes forming in the intestinal wall, allowing gluten to enter, the bodys defence alerts the immune system to attack the invader inside the wall causing inflammation and damage, bloating, gas and bowel disfunction. I will close now, if I discover any more relevant information, I will let you know. Wishing you success in dealing with this horrible illness.

  1. This is fabulous!!! Thank you for sharing and I am so thrilled that this regimen brought you such relief. I hope you continue to feel better and thank you for paying it forward. Hugs, Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Dear Elizabeth. Thank you for for replying to my post, I do hope many people will take notice of the information I supplied. As further proof, I ate a soup spoon of baked beans 3 days ago and suffered a IBS flare up, on looking at the ingredients I noted YEAST EXTRACT which contains gluten. I am waiting for a doctor call back today, to request a stool sample in hopes of find the cause, and will post any relevant info. Warm Regards. . Robert mason

      1. hi Elizabeth. Yeast extract comes from a brewery where beer is made with wheat and barley. Yes I am much better today, though it did plant me in my armchair for 2 days, hiccups during progress, but that's okay, though the first day of recovery does seem to turn me into a Duracell bunny on steroids, hopefully calmer tomorrow. Regards. Robert mason.

      2. Thanks for that info. Glad you are better. And I can so relate about feeling like a Duracell bunny. Steroids are so peculiar. Stay well, Elizabeth (team member)

    2. How are you with beans generally? I mean just the beans, and not any other additives put in the can?
I used to eat lots of them before IBS. I would buy the plain canned ones, just some water and a little salt added, then drain and wash them, and add them to a home cooked stew with vegetables. Or sometimes would soak and cook them myself.
But it's impossible to eat almost any amount of them now. I keep trying to reintroduce them, and they keep annoying my gut.
In my case it had nothing to do with gluten, just the fibre in the beans.

      1. Hi. Thanks for replying to my post, I haven't tried beans on Thier own yet, I do have some in my cuboard and will try them soon and let you know how i get on, it will be interesting to see the results, having to cut so many gluten containing foods from my diet, bread, pork pies etc, in such a short time, and a appetite that has come back with a vengeance, Im finding things to fill the void. I am pleased to read gluten doesn't affect you, the fibre isn't used by the body, it feeds the friendly bacteria, do they irritate your stomach or intestine?, prior to changing my diet I could only eat small amounts of food at a time, the pain came 5 to 15 minutes later when the food was broken down and entered my small intestine, if I find any relevant info, I will let you know.
