Recent Lab Results

Has any one else experienced health practitioners blowing you off? I ask because of a recent experience. My health provider recently ordered some lab work after I complained of upper abdominal pains. The labs came back with three red flags. The most concerning one was the high Absolute monocytes, however, my BUN/Creatinine Ratio was also elevated. Now according to my research both of these elevated levels may also be from gastrointestinal bleeding. Now for the last 25 years I have had numerous bleeding issues, I also have Diverticular Disease. Now when I contacted both my primary health provider and my Gastroenterologist PA, they both blew me off saying they’re not concerned! I’m concerned that they are not more concerned due to my history as well as my family’s history of colon cancer.
Their attitude makes me feel like it’s all in my head, it’s frustrating when the Gastroenterologist PA treats me like I’m wasting her time. It shuts me down and I suffer in silence. I’m curious if anyone else have had a similar experience and what did you do? I’m seeing my Gastroenterologist PA tomorrow and my primary provider next week, should I confront them about their nonchalant way they are treating my health issues? Since receiving these lab results i experienced depression and has moments of suicide thoughts.

  1. Only every single one I've been to for the last 20 yrs. IBS is a diagnosis of exclusion, so they don't even know what causes it. In fact, so many doctors feel that IBS is mostly, if not completely, psychological. Yeah, like, just in your head. Many GPs I've found believe it's all anxiety (which is ridiculous because I had IBS years BEFORE anxiety) because the two go hand in hand - gut health directly impacts your brain chemistry, so it is a vicious cycle. IMO, GPs are pretty worthless for anything but strep-throat or a wound. They are really only the stepping point to get a referral to a doctor that specializes in gut stuff - aka gastroenterologist. I'm glad you're seeing a Gastro doc, but guess what? Be ready to get things shoved up and down inside your body and a bunch of very expensive tests. If you're lucky they'll find something wrong with you and be able to fix it. If not, welcome to the IBS club! Being in the IBS club means everyone you talk you will treat you like it's "all in your head", they will tend to get annoyed with you and dismissive of your health issues because no one really believes there is anything legit wrong with you. Do NOT let it stop you from trying anything and everything to see if it works and do NOT let anyone dictate what you deserve. You will have to be your own health advocate because, let's face it, the medical industry is riddled with apathy.

    1. thank you really appreciate your response.

  2. My Doctor is very conservative . I have been having no bowel movements lately. Just wet farts all the time for month. She thinks there is a blockage. So I did the colonoscopy prep. Hopefully I will have normal bowel movements soon. Otherwise a ct scan so see what's going on.

    1. I would definitely push for some imaging so you can take a look at what's going on inside. -Elizabeth (team member)

  3. I would absolutely bring it up. Let them know you are even struggling with this mentally. Regardless however, I would change doctors immediately. You need a medical professional who is going to take your results seriously and be in your corner. So sorry you are dealing with this, it isn't right. -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. Thank you for your support. Actually Krista is the PA for the real doctor. So I put a call in for him to call me. Thanks again Elizabeth
