Post Infectious IBS

A bit of a random question.
Does anyone suffer from post infectious ibs?

I never had gut issues in my life, then doctors think I had a very nasty infection a few months ago and although the cause of the infection went away it left me with debilitating gut issues( cronic dhiarrhea, anxiety, nausea, loss of appetite)
I lost 25kg in the space of 4 months.

I had every test imaginable (colonoscopy, gastroscopy, gastric emptying study, blood tests, stool tests, MRI and Pet scans)
Everything was completely normal.
The only elevated tests were Fecal Calprotectin and raiser CRP suggesting inflammation). I have had good periods during these months but then I get a flair and it starts all over again.

Doctors think there is a gut brain axis is not functioning properly so put me on an antidepressant and probiotics to see if things improve quicker. All doctors think that I will make a recovery but it will be a LONG road.

As Post Infectious IBS is a bit of a niche area I’m curious if anyone else has gone through this?

  1. Colon nerves become sensitive if the infection is severe.

    1. Little bit of a different situation but when I was nine years old I got the flu really bad and then ever since then I suffered with rheumatoid arthritis, another autoimmune illness like IBS that shares some of it's symptoms. All I can say is that in my personal case one of the few things the doctors agree on is that it was most likely the infection that kicked off my autoimmune illness. They can't say how or why but they do agree it is probably the culprit which always leaves lingering questions. In addition I also had a bout of post-antibiotic c. diff which is an overgrowth of gut flora that can be life threatening. Three weeks in the hospital for that one. It's not quite the same but I know how it feels, emotionally, and it stinks for sure. If there's anything else we can do to help in that regard let us know and remember - you are not alone! Keep on keepin' on, DPM
