Long term PPI use

Let's start again. I've been taking PPI's for my IBS for over 30 years and H2 blockers before that. These drugs have been a life saver for me. I was diagnosed with IBS in my 20's and I am now 68. Just had my "every 5 year" endoscope and have found I have gastritis plus gastro polyps which my GI has found in my last 3 endoscopes (15 years). Having Gastritis has made my IBS much worse. I was reading some articles that long term use of PPI's can actually cause your stomach wall to breakdown lead to having chronic Gastritis and Polyps. UGH! Was wondering if anyone else has experienced their IBS getting worse as they continue to use PPI's long term. BTW I am taking a supplement called Mastic Gum which has greatly helped my IBS symptoms. I do plan to discontinue the use of PPI's to see if that will stop many of my current and worsening IBS symptoms. As you all know the symptoms can go for a period of feeling fine to becoming a disaster that can last years.

  1. I haven't taken PPI's long term but from hearing your story it certainly can make sense that they would cause those issues. If you are up for it, I would see how you feel off of them, of course with the blessing of your doc. -Elizabeth (team member)
