Life with bowel obstruction

Was just released from hospital after a 4 day stay for bowel obstruction. Will follow up with my PCM on 5/4/22. In the meantime it’s still there, per my recent CT scan and since I’m not vomiting there is nothing they can do so they said. I’m still in terrible pain but they sent me home with no pain management and no further suggestions. I haven’t had a BM since last Wednesday and they also knew that when they discharged me. I’ve had multiple abdominal surgeries and only have 6 inches of colon left anyway. My blockage is just on the other side of my stomach and the CT scan shows intestinal dilation right before I empty into my stomach and right after my stomach empties to my small intestine. I was told to eat and drink what I can tolerate and if I have anymore vomiting before the 4th come back to the ER. My pain is 9-10 if 10 is rocking and crying doubled over and I’m running a fever and have been of 100.4-.6 since I was admitted. Anyone had experience clearing an obstruction at home? Metamucil-Miralax/laxatives are a big no no for obstruction so those are out. Been drinking water and holding down what I can of that. I’m at a complete loss and probably shouldn’t have let them discharge me me but other than pain medicine they weren’t doing anything anyways.

  1. My heart goes out to you. I am so sorry you are going through this. If your pain is 9 out of 10 I would go back and advocate for yourself. You need pain management. Also have you been tested for IBD? You may have some time of inflammatory bowel disease and need to be given medication for that. In addition to IBS I was also diagnosed with Crohn's and there are many medication options to help you feel better for IBD. -Elizabeth (team member)
