Is it "normal" to have diarrhea for no reason with IBS?

I noticed that some days like today I wake up with diarrhea even when I don't eat triggering foods. I would say I likely have IBS-M which alternates from constipation for weeks to diarrhea for weeks with no obvious cause. Even eating just my safe foods I can still have diarrhea and I'm not sure why other than my hormones with PMDD symptoms before and after my period. I've slept decently enough and just wake up with diarrhea sometimes. Does this happen to anyone else?

  1. IBS flares can definitely occur without rhyme or reason. That makes it so frustrating to deal with. 🙁
For me, hormones affect my IBS a lot, so I usually notice symptoms before my period and also during ovulation. Stress also has a big impact, and I often get flares not only during, but after stressful times as well. Something as simple as having an appointment or having a disagreement with a loved one can cause me to flare... Waking up too early can have that effect on me, too, which is why I often have flares in the morning on weekdays, but not on weekends.
How long does the diarrhea last for you? And how do you feel during and after the flare?
