Is it IBS?

Hi,

5 years I’ve had terrible bloating and lower abdominal pain to the point where I can’t function many days. I’m a 27 yo guy and look like I’m nine months pregnant. It all started with intense pain in my lower left abdomen and heartburn in 2017. Then in 2018 it was suddenly bloating and dull lower abdominal pain. I do not have diarrhea or constipation, so most doctors have ruled out IBS. I’ve had positive breath tests but have lowered those with supplements and diet. Diverticulitis has been ruled out, as well as MCAS. I’ve had 9 endoscopies, 1 colonoscopy, and 1 ct- scan. I’ve only been diagnosed with esophigitis (EOE).

What tests should I ask for? I feel like I haven’t had much beside the endoscopy because of covid.

Do people have IBS without diarrhea or constipation?

  1. Hi , I'm so sorry that you're dealing with these symptoms, that's so hard. I'm not sure if you've been tested for SIBO yet (https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/getting-tested-for-sibo)? You could also ask for a stool test (https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/testing-and-diagnosis) or a lactose intolerance test (https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/testing-and-diagnosis/lactose-intolerance-tests) if you haven't already done those. In addition, you could try adjusting your diet (maybe try avoiding gluten and/or dairy for a week or two, or try the Low FODMAP diet) and keeping a food diary to see if you can identify any triggers. I really hope you'll get some answers and relief soon. Hugs, Karina (team member)

    1. Maybe you're gluten-sensitive. I'd try eliminating gluten to see if it helps. Lactose sensitivity is another possibility...you can try eliminating lactose or taking a lactose pill when you have any dairy.

      1. Look into SIBO. You may have a bacterial overgrowth. I dealt with that and it gave me horrible bloating and abdominal pain. You can be tested for it. -Elizabeth (team member)
