IBS/IBD

Hello all.
My son is currently dealing with either IBS or IBD. He struggles with going to school as he has to rush to the restroom often. His GI Dr. has prescribed Imodium AD as an everyday medication. Has any one heard of this? The ER Dr. was shocked to hear such thing! He'll be having a Colonoscopy soon, so I'm hoping we get some answers, as this has been going on for over a yr. Any advice on over the counter or even homeopathic meds I can buy him?

Thanks in advance.

  1. Hey ,
That's awful that your son's has to deal with that at school. I'm sorry he's going through that!
I found an article and a forum discussion that you might find helpful. The article talks about herbal and homeopathic remedies for IBS: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/alternative-complementary-treatment/herbal-homeopathic-remedies-peppermint-oil
And the forum discussion talks about over-the-counter medications that might help IBS symptoms: https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/forums/does-anything-over-the-counter-help
Sending healing thoughts to your son! Let us know how the colonoscopy goes. I hope you get some answers!

    1. Initially I had IBS C and now mostly IBS D,it’s an awful disorder and I’ve been on just about every medication and the only thing that helps is Imodium AD. I’ve suffered with this disorder for over 30 years and have had every test known to man (I’m serious) nothing serious shows up. I really feel for your son because it’s very difficult to live with especially during flare ups and anything can set it off, what he can eat today he can’t tolerate tomorrow.Even a change in weather can start a flare up,I’ve been in a flare up for about 6 months but it seems to be easing up(I’m praying). I drink peppermint tea and also use Iberogast and both alone with the Imodium AD does help. I hope this helps him.

      1. I have been living with RA and it's many co-morbidities for almost 40 years myself, so I get it. You really don't ever get a break, just times when things aren't THAT bad and it can be mentally and physically exhausting. Never knowing if you did or didn't do something that started your flare up can be infuriating, and even so you keep yourself on strict diets and other draconian measures and it sometimes makes a difference and sometimes not! You are not alone. Keep on keepin' on, DPM
