I had a short episode of IBS once in 2017, where the doctor provided a diagnosis and gave me some advice on how to manage the symptoms through my diet. I remember passing stool being extremely painful (mainly due to anal fissures from the frequent stools), and sometimes I wouldn't be able to pass anything apart from mucus. From memory it went away after 2 weeks of following the BRAT diet religiously.
Fast forward to 2022, I started getting symptoms of IBS in April, where I would constantly feel bloated, and having the urge to poop (even when there is nothing there). My suspicion was definitely food triggers, as I felt completely fine in the mornings after passing stool and when my stomach is empty.
I tried the elimination diet, taking less fibrous foods and sticking to simple easily digesteable foods. Sometimes I'd have a good few days before the next flareup.
I then went to see a gastroenterologist to get checked, but everything came back negative including celiac desease. At this point the specialist referred me to a nutritionist, which I didn't end up meeting.
Around September I happen to speak to 2 friends who studied pharmacy in uni, and I was telling them about my elimination diet and how it wasn't working. They then pointed out that EGGS could be the culprit (I think I mentioned a dish that i liked to make). After testing this theory, I basically found out I have an intolerance to eggs. This was completely new to me as eggs have always been a huge part of my diet and I've never had issues. But I guess this intolerance got triggered some time in April.
After more trial and error and listening to my body, I realised i'm intolerant to Eggs, dairy, soy and oat. Now that I've eliminated (if not minimised) my intake of these foods, my stomach has been healthier than ever.
Not sure if this helps anyone but I thought I should share!! It could very much be a food intolerance!!!
