How to pinpoint the actual IBS triggers?

Hi unfortunately I (think) I suffer from IBS for the last 3 ~5 years, I say think as the Drs (i'm in the UK) didn't really help much I had to work it out myself! Anyway what I'm struggling with is what are my actual triggers! The weird thing is if i drink lager I'm fine and my symptoms will be fine!? I've worked out it's taking approx 18~20 hours for transit from A (mouth) to B for food i eat so my question is - is it when the food is in my stomach that's causing IBS symptoms or is it when it reaches my small intestine or is it when it reaches my large intestine? If i knew this I'm hoping i could than back-track and work out which food i ate when. BTW I suffer from IBS-D my main problem is, i seem to have to visit the loo about 3 ~ 4 times a day everyday or on a really bad day between 5 ~ 9 times approx.
Thank you in advance 😀

  1. If you’re like me, it’s when it reaches the lower abdomen, the small and large intestine. I have IBS with D, and it appears what comes out, either loose or watery, is not what you just ate, but food ingested 1 or 2 days prior.

    1. ,

You ask really great questions. I often wonder the same. With time, I have come to realize that my issues happen when food hits the large intestine. Everyone is so different.

I would suggest keeping a food journal. Write down everything you eat and with time stamps. Then jot down all your symptoms along with the time. Once you have done this for a bit you will be able to piece together your symptoms.

In addition, I don't know how it works in the UK but can you see another GI so that you can get a proper diagnosis?

I hope you feel better soon.

      1. Thank you to everyone for the replies & useful links 😀
One thing I've also noticed (unless it's a coincidence?) is if I have a Colpermin tablet when I first get up I seem to be fine for the rest of the day! Has anyone else noticed similar? Also I'm not sure if I take one daily if it'll lose it's potency?

        Thanks again,
