Flare ups

hi just wondering has anyone had any problems with avacados or tinned mandarins, just ate small portion of trifle containing tinned manderins but for breakfast had half an avacados and have since had a poor afternoon?
thanks
Yvonne

  1. Thanks for reaching out. Foods with a higher fat content can impact the speed at which we digest foods. In people who experience more diarrhea with their IBS, fatty foods can worsen that diarrhea. However, high fat foods have also been shown to slow motility in those that have IBS-C. High fat foods are not always deep fried. The trifle may have had high-fat whipping cream and high-fat pastry bread. Even “healthy” foods with more fat like avocado, plant-based cooking oils, coconut products and meats can be a trigger. You can try to consume a smaller portion to see if that helps your tolerance.

It may be that you had another trigger as well that coincided. Any new stress or change in routine or medication? Wishing you some answers and relief ahead. Be sure to speak with your doctor about any new, changing or concerning symptoms. Kelly, Irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team Member

    1. Oh yes. I can sometimes eat very small amounts of avocado, but daren't overdo it. And sometimes can't eat any avocado at all for a while because my gut is too sensitive to it.
I have IBS-D. I don't know if it's because avocado is high fibre, or if it's because of the natural sorbitol in it, or what. I don't usually get bad reactions to fats (I can eat milk chocolate and I can eat butter)
But avocado has become a "treat" food I can only dare eat bits of on good days.

I honestly wouldn't dare eat trifle. And I have to be careful with fruit. Tinned mandarins would be dodgy for me, I can just sense it. But not necessarily for everyone. We identify our own bad foods through trial and error I know. I have to be a bit careful with all fruits. Even low Fodmap ones.

Half an avocado is rather a lot. The most I dare eat is about a slice approx. 1/2 inch thick...and that's on a good day.
