Flare up

Does anyone think its best to stay on a liquid diet like soups and smoothies when having a flare up?

  1. For me personally, whenever I do a liquid diet during a flare, it helps me tremendously and typically gets me out of the flare. Of course, everyone is different, but this has been my personal experience. Chicken broth and bone broth are super healing and are great to drink too. -Elizabeth (team member)

    1. I am a bit different I think. The one thing I can't trust when in a flare is any "wet" food like soups or stews (and I do love them. They are perfect comfort food when you aren't feeling well). The dryer kinds of foods seem to help me more, so I'm better to stick to white toast with only a tiny bit of butter, white rice, hard boiled eggs, maybe some lettuce, but no sauces or anything liquid on my food. Now that's odd because I can drink teas and water so long as I have them at different times than my food.
But bone broth is supposed to be one of the best things for healing the gut.

      1. Thank you for sharing what works for you. We are all so different, so it's important to share. It makes sense what you are saying though. Liquids are definitely not for everyone and if not, you make great suggestions for solid foods. -Elizabeth (team member)

      2. It just goes to show that everyone is a little different! Bone broth is very good for the gut, as long as it doesn't upset you further during a flare. Do you use it after a flare? ~Michaela (irritablebowelsyndrome.net Team Member)

    2. I think bone broth is something that can be drunk any time if there are gut problems. That it can be great to incorporate that into the diet generally, but it's especially healing for when there's any inflammation. And I know that's not always the case with IBS.
I find it difficult. One reason is I have been vegetarian for so long and have only just been able to accept that I need to eat fish as many vegetarian/vegan proteins are impossible for me to eat any at all, or enough of now. Even tofu can upset my gut.
The other reason is, bone broth is a 'no-no' if someone has histamine intolerance. I am still not sure if I have or not. I didn't think so, but after spinach with my dinner and a flare up the next day I am beginning to wonder again....
