Exercise and muscle building

Anyone else find it hard to consistently go to the gym with ibs or is it just me?
I’ll be fine for weeks then I’ll have a flare up then I won’t want to go for a few days meaning my routine is off balance. On the flip side walking really helps my cramps (unless it’s too severe). What are some tips for building muscle with ibs?

  1. Hey , this is a great questions. You are definitely not alone here! That's great that walking helps your cramps! When everything else seems hard, if you're still able to get out and go for a walk, that's always a win!

We have a ton of articles on this topic. Here’s one you may find relatable! https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/exercise-routine. This person also talks about how difficult it was to get into an exercise routine. https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/exercise. And here’s one that gives some suggestions for types of exercises you can try! https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/exercise-types. I hope this helps! If you do try some of these exercises, I'd love to hear how it goes!

    1. Love this question. You aren't alone.

I find that low impact exercise is the best for those who have IBS. No hard cardio because in my experience it exacerbates symptoms.

Stretching, yoga and light weights have worked the best for me. And don't get down on yourself if you get off of your routine. Sometimes we can't control our symptoms so we just have to go with the flow. Also eating safe foods consistently helps keeping you on track with working out.
