Ear symptoms with IBS??

I am interested to know if anyone else gets any ear symptoms with IBS.
I don't know if it's IBS related, coincidental, or perhaps related to an atypical "migraine" I am supposed to have!
Or maybe the "migraine" and the IBS are both the same thing? I honestly don't know.

But occasionally (3 times in 2 years) I get a strange ear issue. Always in the right ear. My hearing seems slightly muffled, then passes and everything is normal again. This can coincide with some IBS symptoms like lower abdominal bloating and trapped gas, or more flatulence first thing in the morning. Oddly, when that happens, there is -so far -no diarrhea or loose stool. Just the slight discomfort in the lower gut.

The ear feels warm, and cold compresses help. Twice I had tinnitus; a rhythmic drum-beat sound at 8 beats per second (not heartbeat)
Then it all suddenly disappears.

  1. I have never before heard anybody link anything to do with their ears and their IBS, but now that you mention it, when I have a bad flare up of IBS symptoms (chronic diarrhea, tummy cramps, gas) I get a really horrible itch inside my ear canal, that I cannot reach (never put anything bigger than your elbow inside your ear is doctor's advice!) and inside my ears are.....to use a word I hate... "moist". Now you have me thinking is it related to the stress going on inside my gut??!!!!

    1. That sounds so uncomfortable! Thank you so much for sharing. Wishing you a symptom-free day, Karina (team member)

  2. I've personally never heard of IBS-related ear issues, but I do sometimes get headaches during a flare and also usually have digestive symptoms during a bad headache. It's all related somehow... Have you asked your doctor about this?
There are also abdominal migraines (here's a link to an article : https://irritablebowelsyndrome.net/living/abdominal-migraines) which can be related to actual migraines. I hope more people will share their personal experiences with you, I'm sure you're not alone!
All the best, Karina (team member)

    1. If you have Migraine Disease, it is likely a symptom of an attack. I get this usually with a barometric change. Trigeminal nerve stimulation is believed to be the culprit.

      1. Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I'm sorry that you're suffering from migraines, too. How have you been feeling lately?
        Hugs, Karina (team member)

    2. I saw my doctor today. She said my right ear was so blocked up with wax! My left ear is 100% perfect. The right side is always where I get "migraine" symptoms (not classical migraine but odd) She won't take the wax out because I get vertigo and dizziness with wax removal, sometimes lasting months. She gave me ear drops for it to come out naturally. Hoping they will slowly work.
Yes, trigeminal nerve stuff going on. Sometimes it's toothache in top back teeth which mysteriously comes and disappears, sometimes neck pain on the right...
IBS is somehow involved. My IBS has not been too great during all this and I've had to go back to strict low Fodmaps and restricted diet again, after having made a bit of headway slowly introducing foods I used to eat.

      1. Hi , I think we have “spoken” before. I just wanted to say that everything you have written is exactly what I have been having for a few years now. My theory is that the IBS has caused fibromyalgia which in turn has caused TMJ type symptoms. I have had IBS for 35 years and this has been a gradual process through the years. It started with pains in my legs which gradually migrated down my legs into my feet and toes (when this started I used to kick my leg out involuntarily and often bash my toes on things). Then after some years I noticed that the same thing was happening with my arms, the pains went down into my hands and fingers (now I tend to fling my arms out and bash them on things, also I find my right wrist shakes). Then more recently I have pains going up through my neck into my face, through my eyes and into my ears (mainly right ear). It also feels like I actually have something sticking out of my ear. I also feel pains in my teeth, literally likes something running through them. It starts at the bottom left of my face and goes upwards and toward the right side of my face and into my head. I end up with a sort of migraine feeling in my head and like I said it feels like something is literally sticking out of my ear and could I pulled it, it would pull my face tight. Does any of that resonate with what you are experiencing! It would be nice to know I am not the only person experiencing this! Maureen.

      2. I used to get blocked ears all the time, although I always knew because it affected my hearing. I hope the drops help!
After reading your comment I also remembered that I used to get strange symptoms like pain in parts of my face or above my teeth. I was then also diagnosed with a probable migraine, but I've completely forgotten about that since these symptoms disappeared after a year or two and I haven't had them since. My IBS started after that, so for me, it wasn't related, but I think it was at least partly due to stress or anxiety in my case...
